First National Public Assembly on AI Risks and Policy

The Center for Networked Democracy and Policy (CNDP) organized the first nationwide public discussion on artificial intelligence in the United States. Forty people from across America were randomly chosen to represent different backgrounds - age, race, education, and political views. Over eight days in October 2023, these citizens met online to learn about AI risks and benefits. They heard from experts and discussed how AI is used in healthcare, government records, internet searches, and facial recognition. The participants talked about who should be responsible when AI causes harm and how to make AI safer. They were paid $1,200 for their time. The project was led by Dr. Baobao Zhang from Syracuse University and funded by Schmidt Futures. An oversight panel of experts helped design the process. The final report will help policymakers make better decisions about AI rules and regulations. This assembly shows how regular citizens can be involved in important technology decisions that affect everyone. The project aims to create better ways for the public to participate in discussions about new technologies. Results will be shared with government officials, researchers, and organizations working on AI policy.
