PEN America Wins Award for New Website That Helps Writers

PEN America, an organization that protects writers' freedom to express their ideas, won an important award for their new website. The Interactive Media Council gave them the Outstanding Achievement Award because their website does such a good job helping people support writers who are in danger around the world. The new website has many helpful features. It shares news about writers who need help, gives people easy ways to take action to support threatened writers, and has a blog with stories and poems from writers worldwide. It also has a huge collection of videos and audio recordings of famous writers, plus a database that helps writers find grants and awards. The website makes it simple for people to join campaigns to help imprisoned writers like Nobel Prize winner Liu Xiaobo and others who face persecution for their writing. PEN America has 3,000 members and is part of a worldwide network of 144 centers that work to protect free expression and human rights. They believe writers play a crucial role in defending human rights, and their new website creates a space where writers and supporters can work together across borders to defend freedom of expression. The website was built with help from several design companies and funding from the Carnegie Corporation, Google, and individual donors.
