Houston's Coastal Wetlands and Marine Life Need Protection

Houston's coastal areas include amazing places where rivers meet the ocean, called estuaries and bays. These areas are like nurseries for sea creatures - they're where fish, crabs, oysters, and shrimp grow up before moving to the open ocean. The Galveston Bay system is especially important, but it's in trouble. In the past 20 years, we've lost over 88,000 acres of wetlands that these animals need to survive. These coastal areas also protect us from storms and flooding. Places like Galveston Island State Park let people fish, bike, camp, and see wildlife like pelicans and spoonbills. Houston Wilderness works to protect these 10 different natural areas around Houston. You can visit many sites to learn about and enjoy these ecosystems, from the Sea Center of Texas to Artist Boat programs. The organization brings together businesses, environmental groups, and government to solve problems and teach people about protecting these special places.
